“The meteor fell with a bang.” In the PSD, no one saw it, no one knows anything, no one was at the presidential elections

Luís Montenegro and Luís Marques Mendes

Marques Mendes’ fall was evident. Montenegro and PSD hope that Seguro wins. “Costa’s PS died”.

On the night of the presidential elections, Luis Montenegro went to the campaign headquarters Luís Marques Mendes. He gave the presidential candidate a hug.

But the prime minister, president of the PSD and the party itself will not fall to either side in the second round.

“O PSD will not be involved in the election campaign. We will not issue any indication; nor is it supposed to do so. The PSD was chosen to govern the country and that is what it will do in the coming weeks”, announced Montenegro, last Sunday.

The party will remain neutral. But, behind the scenes at the PSD, the choice is obvious: António José Seguro should be the next president of the Republic. And with a cooperative style, he describes the .

The Government will already be preparing the relationship with Insurance. And he hopes that the former PS general secretary “will show independence”, distance himself from the party he led.

The PSD does not see António José Seguro as a serious obstacle. In other words, he does not see in Seguro anyone who would become a permanent obstacle to the decisions of the Assembly of the Republic or the Government itself.

Insurance is not a candidate for socialismindicates an unidentified high-level AD figure.

“António José Seguro is a gutters, a centrist in the PS. He will put to rest all those who, in the PS, try to pull him into direct confrontation with the Government”, comments a member of the Government.

In fact, something else is mentioned within the PSD: “António Costa’s party died on the night of January 18, 2026”. The PS changed on the night of these presidential elections, it is believed.

Andre Ventura the President of the Republic? It is practically not even a hypothesis behind the scenes of the PSD and the Government.

“I don’t know anything”

All this after a historic defeat. Marques Mendes was the candidate supported by the PSD (or the party’s own candidacy) with .

Marques Mendes announced early on that he would be a candidate independent to the presidency of the Republic. On the night he presented his candidacy, he handed over his PSD member card as a sign of commitment.

But, three months later, the PSD National Council gave the party support for Marques Mendes’ presidential candidacy. And, in the electoral campaign, Luís Montenegro was in Marques Mendes’s entourage, in addition to Hugo Soares or several ministers from the current Government.

In other words, Marques Mendes’ fall (11.3% of the votes, remember) is a grave from AD.

The Observer writes that “the meteor fell with a bang” in PSD. But, within the party, the attitude is this: “I don’t know, I didn’t see it and I wasn’t there.”
