Winter has not yet said the last word: SHMÚ issues warnings for several regions

In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (January 21), strong frosts could hit especially central and eastern Slovakia. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) has therefore announced warnings of the first and second degree. In the south-east of the country, you should also be careful of fog. SHMÚ informed about it on its website.

Level 2 warnings against low temperatures apply in the north of the Prešov region. The temperature could occasionally drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius. “The low temperature represents a potential danger to human health and physical activities outdoors. The expected frost is not rare at the given time of year and area, but it can cause damage to health,” meteorologists warned.

In other districts of eastern Slovakia and in the center of the country, the institute expects temperatures below minus 15 degrees Celsius in places. Level 1 warnings apply. Frost warnings are due to come into effect at 11:00 p.m. and should tentatively pay by Wednesday 09:00 a.m.

In the south-east of Slovakia, however, you should also pay attention to the fog. Visibility in the districts of Košice-okolie, Michalovce, Sobrance, Trebišov and Vranov nad Topľou, where warnings of the first level apply, may drop to 50 to 200 meters. “Reduced visibility is a potential hazard for traffic activities. The occurrence of fogs with this visibility is common at the given time of year and area, but may cause minor damage.” pointed out SHMÚ. The warnings are to remain in effect until Wednesday 10:00 a.m.
