Zambelli’s extradition is postponed again and decision is due in February, says TV

The Italian court has again postponed the decision on the extradition of former federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) to Brazil. The trial at the Rome Court of Appeal resumed this Tuesday (20), but ended up being postponed once again, with a new analysis expected only in February, according to information confirmed by the CNN Brazil.

The process is being processed after successive postponements throughout 2025, motivated by rescheduled hearings and a paralysis of the Italian Judiciary. In the most recent session, the judges analyzed arguments presented by the defense and documents sent by the Federal Supreme Court, which formalized the extradition request.

According to lawyer Fábio Pagnozzi, who represents Zambelli, the former deputy prefers to remain in custody in Italy if the local court understands that there are equivalent crimes in the Italian legal system. The defense maintains that remaining in the European country would be legally more favorable to the parliamentarian.

The case took on a new shape after . The resignation aimed to reinforce the argument of political persecution and facilitate a request for provisional release in Italy to contest the extradition. At the time, the Chamber of Deputies had rejected the revocation of the mandate.

Zambelli was sentenced in two cases by the STF. In the first case, he received a ten-year prison sentence for the crimes of invading the National Justice Council systems and misrepresentation, in partnership with hacker Walter Delgatti Neto.

According to the process, he was hired to insert false documents into the CNJ system, including an arrest warrant against Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

After this conviction, Zambelli left Brazil and ended up arrested in Italy in June, in a joint operation between the Federal Police and local authorities. In October, the Italian Public Prosecutor’s Office issued a favorable opinion on extradition.

If extradition is authorized, the former deputy will have to serve her sentence in Brazil, initially in the Federal District Women’s Penitentiary, known as Colmeia.
