20 years of Blue Zones research: What’s the deal with longevity?

Why do people live particularly old in certain areas? This question has concerned the general public for around 20 years. In November 2005, the American author, researcher and National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner published an article about the Blue Zones, five areas of the world in which there are particularly many fit Centenarians, i.e. people over 100 years old. Specifically, these are the Japanese island of Okinawa, some villages in Sardinia, the Greek island of Ikaria, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, California.
