Train accident in Catalonia

This Tuesday’s accident involved a train between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. The driver died. There was also a third accident, in Catalonia, but with no injuries. General strike announced.

Spain is going through a tragic week when it comes to train accidents.

On Sunday, at least 41 people died after a train accident in the municipality of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba. The accident involved one who had left Malaga and was heading to Madrid, and another who was going from Madrid to Huelva.

This Tuesday, new accident by train, now in Catstudent. It involved a Rodalies line 4 train between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, in the region of Barcelona.

The train collided with a wall containment and collapsed on the rails, approximately 50 kilometers from the city of Barcelona.

O driver died. According to the most recent accounting from local emergency services, 37 people were injured, five of them seriously.

Around 15 ambulances and 11 fire teams were sent to the scene, sources from Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia Police) said.

As a result of the accident, which occurred on a day of intense rain across Catalonia, the Ferrocat plan was activated.

The 112 emergency service received 28 calls related to the accident.

But this Tuesday, there was a third accident: a derailment between the Tordera and Maçanet-Massanes stations, after the vehicle hit a rock that was on the rails. There were no injuries, but the 10 people on the train had to be rescued by firefighters

General strike

After these two accidents, the largest trade union machinists of Spain announced a general strike.

Semaf demands that it be guaranteed safety and reliability of the railway network in the country.

Semaf, which claims to represent 85% of Spanish train drivers, confirmed the death of a 28-year-old train driver, who was still in training, in the accident with a suburban train in Catalonia, on Tuesday night. Another train driver died in Adamuz.

The union, which does not come up with concrete dates for the strike, considers “deterioration unacceptable” of the Spanish railway network and called for urgent measures, as well as for held criminally liable “the people charged with ensuring the security of infrastructure.”
