CDU councilor in Azambuja admits to having used a municipal car for personal purchases

Communist councilor António Torrão admitted to having used a municipal vehicle to make personal purchases in Cartaxo in January. The PSD/Azambuja considers this to be a serious violation of functional duties and criticizes mayor Silvino Lúcio for devaluing the episode.

The Azambuja PSD will file a criminal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office against the CDU councilor, António Torrão, for using a municipal vehicle for personal purposes, the party said.

At issue is the fact that the elected communist in that municipality, António Torrão, admits to having used a municipal vehicle that was assigned to him on January 7th of this year to carry out personal purchases, in a supermarket located in the neighboring municipality of Cartaxo.

The mayor admitted these facts at a meeting of the municipal executive of Azambuja, in the district of Lisbon, held this Tuesday.

In a statement, the council of the social democratic party of Azambuja indicates that it will file a criminal complaint with the Public Ministry of Alenquer, against what it considers to be “an extremely serious fact”.

“The use of a municipal vehicle for private travel, personal purchases or individual conveniences constitutes, in the PSD’s understanding, a serious violation of functional duties and a potential criminal offense related to the improper use of public assets”, emphasize the Social Democrats in the note.

The PSD also accuses the president of the Azambuja City Council, Silvino Lúcio (PS), of devaluing the episode, by “not accepting the transparency and control measures proposed by the PSD”.

“For the PSD/Azambuja, this position is politically unacceptable and ethically unsustainable”, adds the note.

The Lusa agency contacted the CDU councilor to question him about this PSD decision, but the mayor declined to comment.

Lusa also contacted the mayor of Azambuja, Silvino Lúcio, who also declined to comment.

The executive of the Azambuja City Council is made up of three elected representatives from the PS, including the president, two from the PSD, one from the CDU and one from Chega.

The PS and the CDU of Azambuja established an agreement to guarantee the governing stability of the City Council, whose presidency was won by the socialist Silvino Lúcio without an absolute majority.
