Republican president announced tariffs on European countries contrary to his plan to control Greenland
The (European Union) agreed to delay the ratification of a major trade agreement with the United States following the President’s (Republican Party) tariff announcement. The European Parliament’s decision comes at a time when the 27-nation bloc is evaluating the strength of its response if the Republican carries out his threats.
According to the French newspaper, Parliament planned a vote in the coming weeks on whether to remove tariffs on US industrial products as part of the deal. A delay does not make the agreement unfeasible, after months of intense negotiations that led Washington to impose 15% tariffs on EU products.
But by suspending approval, the Europeans are sending a message of discontent to the White House, which, according to EU parliamentarians, would make North American companies apprehensive. “It’s an extremely powerful lever – I don’t think companies would agree to give up the European market”French deputy Valerie Hayer, president of the Renaissance party (center), told journalists.
On January 17, Trump announced a new 10% tariff on 8 NATO (North Atlantic Organization) countries that oppose the annexation of Greenland by the US government. EU leaders are due to hold an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday night (22 January 2026) to discuss US threats against Denmark’s autonomous territory, Greenland.
The European bloc is evaluating different responses if Trump does not back down, including that to the USA. The package of retaliatory tariffs was agreed at the height of the trade standoff between the EU and the US last year, but was eventually suspended until February 6 to avoid a full-blown trade war.
