France has requested a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) exercise in Greenland and is ready to contribute, the office of French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday (21).
News of the request comes as US President Donald Trump arrives in Davos, Switzerland, this Wednesday, where he will likely use the World Economic Forum to intensify his pressure for the acquisition of the Danish territory, despite European protests, in the biggest strain on transatlantic relations in decades.
In a speech in Davos on Tuesday (20), Macron stated that Europe will not even be intimidated, in a blunt criticism of Trump’s threat to impose high tariffs if Europe does not allow him to take control of Greenland.

What is a NATO exercise?
They are programmed by an alliance commander and can range in scope from a few officers to “large-scale combat scenarios involving aircraft, warships, artillery pieces, armored vehicles and thousands of soldiers,” according to the NATO website.
The organization’s countries support the exercises by providing national contributions in the form of troops, equipment or other types of support. “Participating countries are normally responsible for financing any form of national contribution,” the alliance states.
