Perfect storm for Montenegro, the “nut” tightened on both sides

Luís Paixão Martins gets a “little impression” when he sees PSD leaders who don’t understand the “danger”.

On the night of the first round of the presidential elections, Luis Montenegro announced that the PSD would stay in silence in the electoral campaign towards second round, scheduled for February 8th.

In other words, and contrary to what many politicians and analysts expected, there was no declared support for António José Seguro, against André Ventura.

Montenegro’s stance, more than the PSD president’s stance, is the prime minister’s stance: the Government will continue to make some agreements with Chega, others with the PS. And he doesn’t want to favor anyone in the presidential elections: neither the president of Chega, nor the previous secretary general of the PS.

But Luís Paixão Martins sees a complicated future for Montenegro and PSD: “How can people not understand that this current situation in which, deep down, Luís Montenegro and the PSD is a nut that is being tightened on both sides, left and right? How come they don’t realize it’s a problem for the walnut?”

The specialist in political analysis even talks about “perfect storm” for the prime ministerespecially if António José Seguro represents a new impulse for the PS and for the left in general: “If the two blocks grow, if Insurance matches a new soul from the left, The one who suffers from this is the PSD, which is left to govern as a minority, with two growing blocs“.

Focusing on André Ventura, Luís says that he is aware that there are people who coexist well with Chegaincluding within the PSD – something you think “remarkable”.

“There are people from the PSD leadership who, faced with a candidate who says that the objective in these elections is dominate on the rightthink this is not a danger”, warned the consultant.

It’s something that makes him “a little bit impressed”, admitted Luís Paixão Martins.
