The Senegal team achieved an epic achievement last Sunday (18), when they beat Morocco 1-0 in extra time of the African Cup of Nations final. Upon returning to their country, the delegation was welcomed and the local population paraded with great celebration.
Senegal overcame not only the Moroccan players, but also controversial refereeing and a penalty for the opponent in the last play of the game, which generated so much outrage that the Senegalese athletes even left the field.
The Moroccan team missed the penalty and, in extra time, Senegal opened the scoring and secured the title.
The Senegal delegation returned to its country this Tuesday (20) and was welcomed by thousands of people on the streets. The profile of the national team and the competition shared the uproar upon the arrival of the Senegalese. Look:
Senegal won the second of the last three editions of the African Cup of Nations, while Morocco maintained its historic drought and has not won the tournament since 1976.
World Cup is coming
It is worth remembering that Morocco will be Brazil’s opponent in this year’s World Cup. Both are in Group C of the competition, along with Scotland and Haiti. The clash is scheduled for June 13th, at 7pm (Brasília time), in the first round.
The Senegalese, in turn, are in Group I, considered the most complicated in the World Cup. They will face France, Norway and a repechage winner in the first round.
