Tensions in G7 relations: Trump rejects a meeting proposed by Macron

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he would not participate in the extraordinary meeting of the G7 countries, where the war in Ukraine should be discussed. The meeting was proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said on Tuesday that the G7 meeting would not take place this week. This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.

Trump made the announcement at a White House briefing when reporters asked him about a “private message” from Macron suggesting an emergency G7 meeting in Paris – Trump posted the news earlier on Tuesday on his Truth social network. When asked if he would be open to such a meeting, Trump told reporters: “No, I wouldn’t.”

In a “private message” to Trump, Macron suggested that the G7 summit be held in Paris on Thursday, January 22, to which he could – on the sidelines of the meeting – also invite the “Russians” – which would be the first time in almost four years of war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine.

The American president published this news on his social network Truth, and on Tuesday morning it was also confirmed by people close to the French president, saying that it is “very real”. In his report, Macron suggested inviting a delegation of Ukraine and Denmark to the G7 meeting to discuss disagreements over Greenland and representatives of the new leadership in Syria.

On Tuesday, during an interview with an AFP journalist, which already took place at the venue of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Macron declared that “no (G7) meeting is planned. The French leadership is available to organize it,” Macron added at the same time.
