Russia has a new ambassador to Slovakia, Sergej Andreyev, who has not yet handed over his credentials to President Pellegrini. He is an experienced diplomat with a rich career abroad.

Diplomat Sergej Andreyev became the new ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Slovak Republic. The Russian Embassy in Slovakia informed about this on its website, writes TASR.

“By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 887 of December 2, 2025, Sergej Andreyev was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Slovak Republic,” the website of the Russian Embassy states.

Credentials

The new Russian ambassador has not yet handed over credentials to the President of the Slovak Republic, Petr Pellegrini, and the office of the head of state has not yet indicated the date when this official act could take place.

In 1980, Andreyev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). He speaks English, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese and French. He received the diplomatic rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in December 2004.

An experienced diplomat

He has been in the diplomatic service of Russia since 1980. In the past, he worked at embassies in Portugal, Angola, Saint Thomas and Principe, Norway and most recently in Poland.

The new head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Slovakia replaced Igor Bratčikov, who served in this position from October 23, 2020 to December 2, 2025. Bratčikov handed over his credentials to the then president of the Slovak Republic, Zuzana Čaputová, a month after taking office – on November 26, 2020.

The Slovak ambassador to the Russian Federation, Peter Priputen, who has been in his post since November 2024, has not yet handed over his credentials either. He was supposed to hand over the credentials to President Vladimir Putin at a ceremony in the Kremlin last week, but a positive epidemiological test prevented him from doing so. According to the communications department of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Priputen will hand over credentials at the next possible opportunity.
