Thousands of people in the USA marched through the streets of cities and university campuses on Tuesday to protest the immigration policy of US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
- Thousands of people in the US protested against Trump’s immigration policy.
- The protests were held on the anniversary of his second term.
- The incident with the fatal shooting of a woman shocked the public.
- Students and high school students also demonstrated in various cities.
- Most Americans oppose the use of force against immigrants.
These protests were held across the country to mark the first anniversary of the start of Trump’s second term in the White House.
Criticism of immigration policy
The strict measures of the Trump administration in the field of immigration caused outrage from the beginning, but the public – not only in the USA – was perhaps most shocked by the recent incident when a federal agent fatally shot a 37-year-old American woman and mother of three, Renée Good, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Hundreds of protesters rallied in Washington, D.C., but also in smaller cities like Asheville, North Carolina, where demonstrators marched downtown chanting “No to ICE, no to the KKK, no to fascist USA.”
Involvement of young protesters
University students also demonstrated in Cleveland, Ohio, chanting: “No hate, no fear, refugees are welcome.” High school students in Santa Fe, New Mexico walked out of class to participate in a rally called “Stop ICE Terror.”
These actions were organized by left-wing groups, trade unions or local organizations against immigration detention – one of them operates, for example, in El Paso, Texas, where three detainees died in the last six weeks, according to data from federal authorities.
The administration’s stance and plans for protests
President Trump’s administration says it has a voter mandate to deport millions of immigrants who are in the US illegally. However, recent polls show that most Americans disapprove of the use of force by ICE agents and other federal agencies.
Protests are expected to continue towards the West Coast of the US, to cities such as San Francisco and Seattle, where afternoon and evening rallies were planned.
