President Donald Trump stated this Tuesday (20) that his newly created Peace Council could replace the United Nations. Trump criticized the UN, which he said was ineffective in resolving conflicts.
“The U.N. just hasn’t been very helpful. I’m a big fan of the U.N.’s potential, but it’s never lived up to its potential,” Trump told reporters during the news conference marking one year since his return to the White House.
“The UN should have resolved all the wars I resolved. I never turned to them, never even thought about turning to them.”
The Peace Council was created as part of Trump’s agreement to end the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
This week, Trump sent invitations to world leaders to join the panel, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The reception has been somewhat mixed. French President Emmanuel Macron said he will not accept the invitation, citing questions about the scope of the council.
Earlier on Tuesday, the UN’s top humanitarian official, Tom Fletcher, said Trump’s Peace Council would not replace the organization.
“It’s clear to me, and to my colleagues as well, that the United Nations is not going anywhere,” he told CNN, in an interview with Becky Anderson.
