The city recorded the coldest dawn of the year and the lowest temperature of the month in three years; thermometers should gradually rise again from the weekend
With a temperature of around 15°C, the dawn of this Wednesday (21) was the coldest of the year in the city of . The National Institute of Meteorology recorded a minimum temperature of 15.7°C at the Mirante de Santana meteorological station, in the north of the city, and 15.2°C in Interlagos, in the south. The record for the lowest temperature of 2026 was broken for the second day in a row. Yesterday (20) the minimum temperatures were 16.5°C, in Mirante de Santana, and 16.1°C in Interlagos.
The sharp drop in temperature is related to the recent passage of a cold front, which reached with strength above common for this time of year. The cold air of polar origin brought by this cold front combined with the cloudy sky and rain has brought down the temperature in the last 48 hours. The record of 15.7°C today in São Paulo was the lowest temperature in January since 2023, when it was 15.2°C on the 6th and 7th of the month at the time.
The advance of the cold front
Cold fronts advance over the country throughout the year. This was accompanied by a mass of polar air stronger than normal (by the standards of the time), which caused a drop in temperatures. But see, this is not an exceptional event. Although it is unusual to have cold days in the middle of summer, it is not an extremely rare episode.
Regarding rain, according to Climatempo, the greatest chances of rain occur on Friday (23), with the possibility of a volume of 5.3 mm. On Saturday (24) and Sunday (25) the volume of rain is around 2mm. In the coming weeks, in the short/medium term, there is no forecast of the approach of a new cold front and the heat will gradually gain strength again from the weekend onwards and next week the highs will reach around 30ºC.
