The secretary general of Mark Rutte, stated this Wednesday (21) that he did not discuss the issue of Danish sovereignty over Greenland during his meeting with the president of the , . Rutte, who spoke in an interview with Fox News, offered few details about the “milestone” that Trump announced for an agreement following his conversation with the NATO chief.

“We have a good agreement to start working on these issues,” Rutte said, echoing his previous comments to AFP that there was still a lot of work to achieve a real agreement. “That means we both agreed to work towards that, when you look at NATO and what NATO can do together to ensure that the entire Arctic region is safe, including Greenland,” he said.

When asked whether Greenland would remain Denmark’s territory in this eventual agreement, Rutte said that “the topic has not come up again” in his “conversations tonight with the American president”. Trump “is focused on what we must do to protect this huge Arctic region, where changes are taking place, where the Chinese and Russians are increasingly active,” Rutte added. “That was really the focus of our discussions,” he said.
