Portuguese police arrest young man who set fire to Cristiano Ronaldo statue

The Portuguese Public Security police announced on social media, this Wednesday, that they had apprehended the young man who set fire to the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo, located next to the center forward’s Museum, in Funchal, on Madeira Island. The unidentified young man was referred to a Psychiatry service at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, according to local media.

“#PSPMadeira identified and intercepted the citizen responsible for setting fire to the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo next to the CR7 Museum, in Funchal. #SemperPresente”, announced the organization, on the X network.

The young man was intercepted in the municipality of Santa Cruz, according to the Portuguese newspaper JM Madeira, before being taken to the hospital’s health services. Also according to the newspaper, the local police mounted a ‘manhunt’ operation following the repercussions of the case.

The criminal action was recorded by the young man in a video and published on social media. The case is treated as a crime of vandalism by the local police.

In the video released, the individual appears with a pixelated image while setting fire to the life-size statue, one of the main tourist attractions in the area.

The CR7 Museum, opened in 2013 in the player’s hometown, brings together historic shirts, trophies and awards won throughout Cristiano Ronaldo’s career. The statue, positioned outside, is traditionally used by visitors for photos and tourist records.

According to authorities, the video was published on the Instagram profile @zaino.tcc.filipe. In the description, the author defines himself as “a person, a freestyler and a local resident” and included a cryptic message: “This is the last warning from God”.
