Bernd Wilms, the former director of the Deutsches Theater, died in Berlin at the age of 85. The theater in Berlin’s Schumannstrasse announced this, citing his family. With “his clever eye” he shaped an era at the German Theater. Wilms managed the house from 2001 to 2008; before that he was at the Maxim Gorki Theater. “Bernd Wilms was not a director himself, but an unpretentious enabler, an inventor and connoisseur of human nature, a champion of craftsmanship, someone who became stronger through defeat,” the theater paid tribute to him.
