“Sinners”, a period film that mixes horror, action and music, leads the Oscar race with a record 16 nominations, while “The Secret Agent” competes in four categories, according to the announcement, this Thursday (22), of the nominees for the Academy Awards, which will be handed out on March 15 in Hollywood.

The thriller “One Battle After Another”, directed by American Paul Thomas Anderson, came in second place among the films with the most nominations, competing in 13 categories; followed by “Frankenstein”, by Mexican Guillermo del Toro; “Marty Supreme”; American Josh Safdie; and “Valor Sentimental”, by Norwegian Joachim Trier, with nine nominations each.

“Pecadores” and “Uma Batalha After Another”, the two most nominated for the 98th edition of the awards.

The previous record had been shared by “The Mean One”, “Titanic” and “La La Land”, all tied with 14 nominations.

“Sinners”, set in the segregationist South of the United States in the 1930s, will compete for the Oscar for best film and guaranteed its director, Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”), a place to compete for the best director statuette.

The vampire production also placed Michael B. Jordan, who plays twin brothers, in the best actor category, as well as Delroy Lindo for best supporting actor and Wummi Mosaku for best supporting actress.

The production did not stop there and had repercussions in technical, script, costume, makeup and musical categories, including the nomination of “I Lied To You” for best original song.

It was also a good morning for “O Agente Secreto”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho, nominated in four categories, the main one at the ceremony, following in the footsteps of “Não Isso Aqui”, Brazilian representative last year.

The film will also compete in the best international film category, in which it will face stiff competition from “Sentimental Value”, a Norwegian family drama that is also up for best film and has established itself in the acting categories. Another competitor will be the Spanish “Sirât”, with two nominations.

Wagner Moura will compete for the Oscar for best actor, but to win the statuette, he will have to overcome big names such as Jordan, Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”) and Leonardo DiCaprio, who is seeking his second Oscar in the lead role in “One Battle After Another”.

DiCaprio plays a retired revolutionary who takes care of his teenage daughter in an environment of radicalism, migrant operations and white supremacists. Benicio Del Toro is in the running for the best supporting actor award.

The American ode is also in the running in the best director and best film categories.

The latter, the most important at the Oscars, also includes “Hamnet”, the tragedy that fictionally explores the mourning of Agnes and William Shakespeare after the death of their son, and which accumulated eight nominations this Thursday.

Chloé Zhao’s film earned Jessie Buckley a nomination for best actress as the British playwright’s wife. Emma Stone, the ambivalent star of “Bugonia”, by Yorgos Lanthimos, and Norwegian Renate Reinsve, from “Valor Sentimental”, directed by Joachim Trier, will also compete in this category.

The big surprise was the inclusion of “F1”, which follows a unique car driver played by Brad Pitt, in the running for the Oscar for best film. The production received four nominations, including editing, sound and visual effects.

Although it didn’t enter the best director category, his “Frankenstein” gave protagonist Jacob Elordi the chance to win his first Oscar and provided Netflix with 16 nominations.

The film based on the book of the same name will also compete for the adapted screenplay, makeup and other technical categories.

This edition introduced the new best cast category, which debuted with nominations for “The Secret Agent”, “Hamnet”, “Marty Supreme”, “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners”.

The names selected in the 24 categories were announced this Thursday in a presentation led by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. The final round of voting, carried out by Academy members, will take place from February 26th to March 5th.
