Why does the Copinha final always take place on January 25th? Find out

The final of the 2026 edition of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior will follow the tradition of the tournament and will take place on January 25th, next Sunday.

The first finalist is Cruzeiro, last Wednesday (21), in a duel held in Taubaté.

Cruzeiro’s opponent in the final will come from . The second semi-final takes place this Thursday (22), at 9:30 pm, at Morumbis.

Final of the Cup on a festive date

Traditionally, the Copinha final always takes place on January 25th. The date marks the anniversary of the capital of São Paulo.

In the first editions of the base tournament, only teams from the state of São Paulo participated, and the city hall was responsible for the organization. Since the late 1980s, the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) has run the competition.

Despite the importance of having the decision on the anniversary of the city of São Paulo, Copinha has already defined the champion on other dates. In 1971, for example, Fluminense won the title after beating Botafogo on March 6 of that year.
