Albano Jerónimo and the state of the world: “Empathy is tired, humor is a muscle, a physical gym”

Podcast

Actor Albano Jerónimo went to the podcast “No Último Episode” to talk about the expected return of the series “Ruído”, created by Bruno Nogueira for RTP. But also about upcoming projects and the future of audiovisual and national cinema

Actor and director Albano Jerónimo is not just any face. We know him from theater, television, cinema, everything and anything else. You can see him in “Vitória”, a SIC soap opera, or in films like “A Herdade” (2019) or “Restos do Vento” (2022). We also know very well who he is in the famous national series “Rabo de Peixe”, a major Portuguese production on Netflix.

What we perhaps didn’t know was that the actor could be a comic actor. Have the timingphysicality, fits well in the middle of a creation by comedian Bruno Nogueira, alongside names like Gabriela Barros or Rita Cabaço. “Noise” caused noise on RTP and social media, a series of sketches comics based on a simple premise that may or may not be waiting for us: laughing is prohibited.

In another episode of “No Último Episode”, film and television critic José Paiva Capucho invited Albano Jerónimo to try to understand what the second season will be like and what projects are waiting in 2026.

“It was a constant pleasure to work on this ‘Noise’, I almost forgot it was work”, Albano Jerónimo began by saying. In several sketcheswhich could be about mere notes from our daily lives alone or as a couple or even focus on instructional classes for comedians, Albano Jerónimo always tried to find the pleasure of being in a project that, despite the apparent tone of lightness, was fundamental. “Humor must be increasingly on our menu. The world is serious. And humor is a kind of muscle, almost like a civic gymnasium”, he argues.

What also worked well in “Noise” were the videos that ended up on social media. In other words, the excerpts in format reels on Instagram, making the conversation about the series even more viral. The actor is congratulated on his success on and off the small screen, but does not change his view of reality and the way of acting. “I only have Instagram and I use it for purely professional purposes. I don’t change the way I work because of that. But the truth is that comedy is a bit like classical music, it has a green road to follow. Either you like it or you don’t like it, it’s very direct”, said Albano Jerónimo. As for the second season, there isn’t much to add yet. Just this: “We’re going to come back with even more desire to tear up”, he argues.

As for 2026, for now, “Primeira Pessoa do Plural” is coming, a film made alongside Isabel Abreu, and directed by Sandro Aguilar, who has toured several festivals, following a story with several facets and about the mourning that has to be done when faced with the loss of a child. “It’s been good to talk about this film, because out there people don’t know me anywhere. Making this film was a leap of faith. They’ve been evaluating me just on my work. It’s much fairer. And they were really surprised when I told them about the budget. They actually said: ‘What? But that’s just for one day, right?’ And I replied that it was for the entire shooting period”; finished.

More projects will come, with or without Artificial Intelligence — a piece made with Carincur and João Pedro Fonseca — and a bigger fight: for empathy, off and on stage. “Empathy is tired, but we have to keep insisting.” And, of course, the certainty that it is necessary to make culture “ordinary and not extraordinary”, that it is necessary to continue investing in the Ministry of Culture and that our teams are in no way behind other foreign ones. “We cannot create ghettos, culture has to be as normal as drinking a glass of water.”

How many times have I wanted to know more about “that” last episode? Finding answers that create more questions and only leave you wondering when the next chapter will premiere?
