Canada does not exist because of the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday in response to US President Donald Trump’s statement to the contrary. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
Speaking before the Canadian Parliament, Carney said Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership. “Canada does not live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadians,” he emphasized.
The breakdown of global governance
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday, Carney said in a speech that the US-led system of global governance was “falling apart”. He did not name Trump specifically.
According to the Canadian Prime Minister, medium-sized powers such as Canada, which prospered in the era of “American hegemony”, must realize that a new reality has arisen and that “obedience” will not protect them from the aggression of the great powers.
Disagreement with US tariffs
According to Carney, Canada also strongly opposes any US tariffs because of Trump’s aim to take over Greenland, which is an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s speech caught the attention of the American President. “I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t very grateful,” Trump said of Carney’s speech. “Canada exists because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,” he warned immediately.
A model against the decline of democracy
In a speech aimed at a domestic audience on Thursday, Carney said Canada should serve as a role model in an era of “democratic decline.”
“Canada cannot solve all the world’s problems, but we can show that there is another way, that history is not destined for authoritarianism and isolation,” concluded the Canadian Prime Minister.
