Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen announced the upcoming negotiations with the US on Greenland

Denmark’s negotiations with the United States on the security of Greenland are to begin soon, Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen announced. Washington and Copenhagen plan to align their positions on security in the Arctic region after a recent high-level diplomatic meeting.

Negotiations with the United States on Greenland to strengthen security in the Arctic region should begin soon. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen announced this in Copenhagen on Friday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

“We will start the meetings fairly quickly. We will not disclose when these meetings will take place,” Rasmussen said, adding that the situation needs to be calmed down for now. He said the talks would focus on “security, security and security”.

Agreement on Arctic Security

According to the Danish minister, the space for “proper negotiations” with Washington opened up again after Wednesday’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. After the meeting, Trump announced the creation of a framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and the entire Arctic region.

According to Rasmussen, Denmark and the United States have the same goals in the area of Arctic security, but they differ in the ways of achieving them. “Now we have an opportunity to reconcile things,” he noted.

Trump’s intention

Thanks to the unspecified agreement, Trump backed away from his original plan to impose additional tariffs on imports from eight European countries involved in the dispute over Greenland. At the same time, he ruled out the use of force to obtain this autonomous territory.

An AFP source claims that part of the agreement includes a provision to renegotiate the 1951 defense treaty that concerns Greenland. At the same time, Trump said that the agreement would give the United States “full access” to the territory. The American president justifies his long-term interest in Greenland with national security and alleged threats from Russia and China.
