EU has underinvested in Arctic security, time to step up

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this morning (local time) that the European Union invests little in Arctic security, and that it is time to intensify efforts.

At a press conference following an informal Commission meeting, von der Leyen said the EU was working to improve relations with Greenland through a “substantial investment package”.

“We believe we should use our increased defense spending on Arctic-ready equipment, such as a European icebreaker,” he added.
