With a free kick from Gabigol in stoppage time, in a move that included a mistake from goalkeeper Hugo, Santos sought a draw with Corinthians this Thursday (22), in the Campeonato Paulista. At Vila Belmiro, the teams were 1-1.
The result left a bitter taste for the visitors, who had been ahead since the 16th minute of the first half, when Yuri Alberto opened the scoring. The advantage could have been even greater, but three minutes earlier the number 9 himself had wasted a penalty kick.
At 49 in the final stage, the error was missed. As a result of the pressure, Santos took a free kick at the edge of the area. Gabigol took a strong shot, into the goalkeeper’s corner, and Hugo ended up accepting it, declaring the draw.
Despite Corinthians frustration, the draw was bad for both teams, who only reached five points in the competition. Corinthians appears in eighth place, the last one that guarantees a place in the next phase. Santos is in ninth place and, at this moment, would be eliminated before the knockout stage.
The two black and white teams won just one of the four games played in the tournament, both in the opening round. The team led by Dorival Júnior beat Ponte Preta 3-0, while the team led by Juan Pablo Vojvoda beat Novorizontino 2-1. Since then, each has had one defeat and two draws.
The two teams return to the field next Sunday (25). Again at Vila Belmiro, Santos faces Red Bull Bragantino, at 4pm. Later, at 8:30 pm, Corinthians visits Velo Clube.
