A delegation arrived in Moscow for talks with the Russian president, as part of Washington’s efforts to mediate an end to the war in , which is approaching its fourth anniversary.
The US special envoy Steve Witkoff and the son-in-law of the US president, Jared Kushner, are participating in the talks, while on the Russian side, according to the Kremlin, Yuri Usakov and Kirill Dmitriev are present.
The visit is part of the intensification of the American diplomatic initiative to reach a peace agreement, after a year of fruitless efforts with no substantial result.
Steve Witkoff, who was at the World Economic Forum in Davos in the past few days, said that the talks are now in the final stage and that there is “just one issue” left to close the deal, without however revealing the main point of friction. “We are at the end and, frankly, I am optimistic,” he said.
According to an official information from the Kremlin, the meeting between Vladimir Putin and the American special envoy has already started in the Kremlin, with the presence of Jared Kushner from the American side, which underlines the importance that Washington attaches to this phase of the negotiations.
