Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, dissolved the Lower House of Parliament this Friday (23) and paved the way for an early election to be held on February 8. The election will renew the 465 seats in the Lower Chamber.
The measure is an attempt by Takaichi to capitalize on high popularity to help the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) regain the space lost in recent years. The dissolution of Parliament, however, will delay the vote on the Budget. The prime minister has only been in office for three months and has approval ratings of around 70%.
