Mozambique talks about a humanitarian catastrophe due to the floods - 700,000 people affected

According to Inocêncio Impissa, in the current rainy season, there are over 700 thousand people affected, around 630 thousand of which are due to floods, in almost the entire country.

The Mozambican Government admitted this Friday that the country is under a humanitarian catastrophe, with around 54,000 people in accommodation centers and around 700,000 affected by floods in the current rainy season.

“Yes, we can say that we are facing a catastrophe, not only because of the number of affected citizens involved, that is, we are talking, for example, about 54 thousand fellow citizens in accommodation centers”, said Inocêncio Impissa, during the daily assessment of the impacts of the floods in the country.

According to Impissa, in the current rainy season, there are over 700,000 people affected, around 630,000 of which are due to floods, across almost the entire country.

According to Government data, updated until Thursday, 19,254 people who were besieged in affected areas have already been rescued, 11,693 in Maputo province and 7,561 rescued in Gaza, with emphasis on the districts of Guijá, with 6,919, and Chókwè with 528 people rescued.

“The rescue actions also include the presence of rescue and rescue firefighters who work 24 hours a day and more than 160 volunteers from the Red Cross and other organizations,” said Impissa, adding that 91 accommodation centers are in operation in the affected areas to serve the displaced populations.

Regarding the education sector, the Government counts 188 schools affected in Gaza province, with 91 classrooms partially destroyed, while Maputo province has 85 affected and 113 classrooms destroyed.

“The province of Sofala recorded the destruction of 63 schools, which resulted in the total destruction of 46 classrooms and 182 partially,” said the Government spokesperson, adding that the city of Maputo has 24 schools affected.

To ensure the start of the 2026 school year, on January 30, the Government said it was committed to mobilizing alternative means such as school tents to function as temporary learning spaces, blackboards, tarpaulins, ‘kit’ of different categories, hygiene and cleaning material, mobilization of various teaching materials.

At least 642,122 people have been affected since January 7 by the floods in Mozambique, with 12 deaths, according to provisional data from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).

According to the INGD database, to which Lusa had access, with data up to 3:50 pm (1:50 pm Lisbon) today, the floods occurring in various parts of the country affected the equivalent of 139,708 families, with 2,879 houses partially destroyed, 757 completely destroyed and 71,560 flooded.
