Muricy Ramalho presented his resignation to the new president of São Paulo, Harry Massis Junior, on Friday afternoon (23). The 70-year-old former coach, who had been working as football technical coordinator since 2021, pointed to medical reasons to justify the decision.
He recently underwent surgery on his right knee and said he will have to undergo surgery on his left as well. People close to him point out, however, that the reasons are not just medical: the tricolor idol is unhappy with the situation at the Morumbi club.
Player and coach of São Paulo in the past, Muricy returned as coordinator at the beginning of President Julio Casares’ first term. The leader was re-elected, but, amid serious institutional and impeachment proceedings, he resigned last Wednesday (21).
Casares had already been removed the previous week, in a vote by the Deliberative Council. A new vote, this one general among members, would define whether or not he would return to the presidential chair, but he went ahead and announced his departure.
The resignation occurred on a day of operations by the São Paulo Civil Police to investigate an alleged scheme of illegal sale of boxes for shows at the Morumbi stadium. One of the targets was Mara Casares, Julio’s ex-wife, who served as director of São Paulo.
The allegations of irregularities regarding the boxes were precisely the basis for the impeachment request filed by the opposition in December. Harry Massis, who was vice president, left the coalition that supported the president, became opposition and voted for impeachment.
The 80-year-old businessman assumed the interim presidency last week and, with his resignation, became the effective president. He will remain in office until the end of 2026, when Casares’ term would end. But it will be without Muricy Ramalho.
