The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, thanked the invitation, but announced that Spain will not join the new “Peace Council”, proposed by the American president, Donald Trump, in a press conference this Friday, 23. The Spanish leader justified the decision by mentioning “coherence”.
“We took this decision in coherence and consistency with our commitment to the multilateral order, to the United Nations (UN) and to international rights. It is clear that this council is outside the UN and, certainly, did not include the Palestinian Authority”, he stated.
Sánchez pointed out that the future of Gaza and the West Bank must belong to the Palestinians and highlighted the importance of Palestine’s dialogue with Israel. In view of this, he reiterated that Spain remains committed to peace and to other European countries and international agents, betting on the stabilization of the region.
