“Sinners” costume designer becomes the most Oscar-nominated black woman

The costume designer Ruth E. Carter became the most Oscar-nominated black woman in the history of the awards’ 98 editions. With the announcement of the competitors made by the Academy this Thursday (22), she broke a record.

In addition, she accumulated four more nominations in the Best Costume Design category — with the films “Malcolm X”, “Amistad”, “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, the last two earning .

Before her nomination, she was side by side with actress Viola Davis, who has already had four nominations. Now, she is tied with Spike Lee and Morgan Freeman, behind Quincy Jones, with seven, and Denzel Washington, with nine.

Competing with Carter at the 2026 Oscars are costume designers Deborah L. Scott (“Avatar: Fire and Ashes”), Kate Hawley (“Frankenstein”), Malgosia Turzanska (“Hamnet”) and Miyako Belizzi (“Marty Supreme”).

Paul Tazewell, costume designer for “Wicked: Part 2”, who was supposed to appear on this list after , was left out of this year’s list.
