Six people were injured Thursday in a knife attack following a pro-Kurdish demonstration in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The condition of the two injured is critical, TASR informs, according to an AFP report.

The demonstration took place in the center of Antwerp on the busy and tourist-frequented Operaplein near the opera house. Police detained two people and all the injured were taken to hospital, confirmed police spokesman Wouter Bruyns. All hospitalized persons suffered stab wounds.

The motive is still unclear

The motive of the incident was not immediately known.

The Belgian news agency Belga reported that around 50 people took part in the protest rally, which was initially peaceful. During the demonstration, the people present waved Kurdish flags and the flags of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

However, the situation escalated immediately after the end of the demonstration at approximately 19:20. h. According to a police spokesman, the two suspects got mixed up among the protesters, but they were still apprehended.

The case continues to be thoroughly investigated, Belga adds.
