Andrej Babiš again at the head of ANO: The movement has shown him repeated trust

The Czech government movement ANO re-elected its founder and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš as chairman at the national assembly in Prague on Saturday. Babiš was the only candidate for this post, TASR informs, according to a report from station ČT24.

196 of the 209 delegates present voted for Babiš to remain as ANO chairman. Two members voted against and 11 abstained. The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic defended his position after two years and has led the movement continuously since its foundation. ANO will continue to elect its first vice-president, who will probably remain vice-prime minister Karel Havlíček, as well as the remaining four vice-presidents.

The Czech Prime Minister addressed several topics in his speech before the vote. He took stock of the past years and electoral successes, he spoke about the alleged “systematic pressure” from the media, criticized the previous government and at the same time declared that the government coalition (ANO, SPD, Motoristi sebe) should, in his opinion, present a common candidate for the presidential elections in 2028. He also announced that he will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in February.

In the October 2025 elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, the ANO movement returned to the position of the strongest political entity in the country. It won almost 35 percent of the vote and formed a coalition with the SPD and the Motoristas sebe. Andrej Babiš returned to the post of prime minister in December.

Babiš and his movement decided to enter politics in the fall of 2011. After the parliamentary elections in 2013, ANO became part of the government of Bohuslav Sobotka (then ČSSD), where Babiš held the position of Minister of Finance. He left the government in May 2017, when Sobotka decided to dismiss him due to uncertainties surrounding his business and financial situation.

  • After the elections in 2017, ANO first formed a minority government on its own, which did not win the confidence of the parliament. Since June 2018, the movement has ruled together with the Social Democrats (ČSSD) with the support of the KSČM, while Babiš was the prime minister. After the 2021 elections, the opposition movement ended.
