Lawyer Alessandro Soares and journalist and former senator Ana Amélia Lemos discussed, this Friday (23), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 11pm), whether United States President Donald Trump’s Peace Council is an affront to the UN (United Nations).
The Council’s logo features a shield with a globe in the middle, surrounded by two olive branches. , but with a difference: the UN brand shows the entire world and that of the Trump Council puts North America at the center.
Alessandro believes that the peace council is an affront.
“It’s even a redundancy, the Donald Trump government itself and its actions are an affront to the world in general. It is, of course, an affront to the UN”, he stated.
“Internationally it means a return to a kind of mercantilism. We saw what happened in the case of Venezuela, the return to a Hobbesian tradition, which says that, on the global level, what counts is strength. […] The problem is that the world does not have the strength to react at this exact moment”, he continued.
Ana Amélia argues that Trump is occupying the space left by the UN.
“In fact, it is the result of the visible weakening of the UN. Take the case of the episode of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this episode was not resolved by the United Nations. This weakening can be found in other episodes such as the one in the Middle East”, he said.
“Trump’s initiative is to be the protagonist in a new era of global geopolitics. It is an attempt to demonstrate the power that the United States has from a military and defense point of view and to demonstrate that it can, at will, change the course of geopolitics itself”, he continued.
