“Freedom for Rojava”, “Peace for Kurdistan” or “Jolani Terrorist” echoed through the university district in Vienna’s ninth district on Saturday afternoon. Almost 4,000 people gathered in Vorivpark from 4 p.m., including a striking number of women, children, families and young people. They want to draw attention to the current situation of the Kurds in Syria and call on the international community to show solidarity. Hundreds of them carry signs and banners with slogans such as “Innocent civilians are being killed,” “The Kurds defended you – world, now it is time to pay the debt,” or “IS is back, Kobanê is under attack.” They accuse Europe and the USA of having abandoned the Kurds and warn of impending genocide.
