Kobra’s work becomes the official UN seal for 80 years as an international council

The UN (United Nations) chose a work by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra to illustrate a commemorative postage stamp launched this Friday (23).

The design celebrates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc). “Celebrating the central role of multilateralism, the seal highlights our shared humanity, sustainability and planet Earth”, describes the UN.

The image that illustrates the seal had already been painted by Kobra in 2022 on a side wall of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, which is located at the UN headquarters in New York. According to the organization, the work, which portrays a father handing over the Earth to his daughter, represents Ecosoc’s commitment to people, the planet and global solidarity.

The launch ceremony was attended by the artist, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the president of Ecosoc, Lok Bahadur Thapa, among other authorities.

In a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Kobra spoke about his work and defended the importance of taking care of the environment for a better future.

“This work of mine, which is now immortalized through this Council seal, is more than a declaration of love for your children, who are the future of humanity, it is more than a declaration of love for planet Earth. It is a warning that, I hope, serves as a reflection: in what state of conservation will be the greatest gift you want to leave for your child?”, said the artist.
