Polarization marks the second round of presidential elections: “I feel like 2026 started ten years ago, I’m already exhausted”

In more than 50 years of democracy in Portugal, a second round of presidential elections is being held for only the second time. António José Seguro and André Ventura are the protagonists and the race is close. Has everything already been decided or will abstention ruin the country’s future? Get ready for this historic second round with the ‘Expresso da Meia-Noite’ podcast program

For the first time in many years of the program, ‘Expresso da Meia-Noite’ is about a second round in the presidential elections. After António José Seguro failed to gather the majority of votes necessary to secure the presidency, on February 8th the Portuguese returned to the polls to choose between the candidate, former leader of the Socialist Party, and the current leader of Chega, André Ventura. But, before making the decision, we still have a unique debate between the two candidates, simultaneously on the three television channels SIC, RTP and TV, and ten days of electoral campaign ahead. In this episode, we will discuss whether everything has already been decided, whether the campaign can still change a lot, whether or not abstention will be greater and how voters will cross paths in an election that was not completely surprising, but that a few months ago no one thought would be the outcome of the first round.

To prepare for the second round, we invited Teresa Nogueira Pinto, professor of Political Science, Pedro Gomes Sanches, commentator at SIC, António Gomes, general director of GfK and Miguel Guedes, communications consultant. Moderation was by Ricardo Costa and Ângela Silva. Listen to the podcast program here, broadcast on January 24th on SIC Notícias.
