The Ukrainians, Americans and Russians will continue peace negotiations in February

The US-backed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi were conducted in a constructive spirit.

Trilateral talks by delegations from Russia, Ukraine and the US to end the war were a “big step”, a US official said on Saturday. Both Moscow and Kyiv agreed to continue talks next week, Sunday, February 1, in Abu Dhabi, TASR reports based on reports from AFP and Reuters.

“I think getting everyone around the table was a big step. It confirms that a lot has been accomplished to date,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “There was a lot of mutual respect between the parties involved in the room because they were really trying to find solutions,” he told reporters after the meeting. “We got down to the nitty-gritty details and on Sunday … at the next meeting we could finalize this deal,” the official claimed.

Positive atmosphere of negotiations

A spokesman for the host government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) assessed that the second day of negotiations was spent in a “constructive and positive atmosphere”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also informed about the constructive talks. He explained on the social network that “a lot” was discussed, while the delegates of all parties will inform the leaders of their countries with the results, with whom they will coordinate further steps.

Peace proposal and further procedure

Negotiations in the UAE between Ukrainian and Russian delegations on a US-backed peace proposal began on Friday. Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said the discussions focused “on the parameters of ending the Russian war and the further logic of the negotiation process.”
