Trump posts photo with penguin and is mocked online

The White House is trying to associate the animal with the campaign to annex Greenland, but the bird only lives in the Southern Hemisphere

On Friday (January 23, 2026) he published on his official profile an image of the president (Republican Party) walking in Greenland next to a penguin with the United States flag. What was supposed to be a campaign for the North American annexation of the European country ended up being a reason for Trump to be mocked on the internet because there are no penguins in Greenland.

Several profiles commented that the North American government’s setup makes no sense as the birds are native to the Southern Hemisphere. Most of the penguins live in Antarctica, around 20,000 km from Greenland. They are also found in regions of South America, Australia and South Africa.

DISPUTE FOR GREENLAND

Trump has been pressuring the European Union to cede the island to the US since early January. The North American has already imposed tariffs against European countries that have expressed opposition to the White House’s wishes, but retreated after the EU (European Union) said it would block the bloc’s trade agreement with the USA.

On Wednesday (Jan 21), Trump wrote that he would control parts of Greenland. The next day, Denmark –which holds sovereignty over Greenland– and the (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) ceded the territory to the USA.

Despite pressure from Trump, Europe has maintained a position that it will not negotiate the cession of Greenland to the USA.
