The president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened Canada this Saturday with imposing 100% tariffs if its trade negotiations with China end up fruitful in a new sign of the diplomatic crisis between the neighboring countries.
A week ago Carney held a meeting with the president of China, Xi Jinping, during an official visit to the Asian country after which he stated that bilateral relations with China are “more predictable” than those that the North American country has with the United States after Trump’s return to the White House.
In response, in a message published on his social networks, Trump has once again described the Canadian Prime Minister as the “governor” of another US state and warned that Canada will be the biggest loser in the event of an agreement with Beijing.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to turn Canada into a shipping port for China to ship goods and products to the United States, he is very wrong,” Trump said.
“China will eat Canada, devour it completely, destroying its businesses, its social fabric and its lifestyle in general,” Trump added before threatening that “if Canada reaches an agreement with China, a 100% tariff will immediately be applied to all Canadian goods and products entering the United States.”
