That of stealing proof that the right, deep down, knows that global warming is real. After all, the Danish island only gained political relevance because, thanks to global warming, the Arctic Ocean became much more navigable.
In an article published in the journal Nature Reviews Earth and Environment in March 2024, researchers Alexandra Jahn, Marika M. Holland and Jennifer E. Kay showed that a previously unthinkable possibility was created: an ice-free Arctic for much of the year.
Their estimates indicate that, between 2020 and 2030, ice-free Septembers could already occur in the Arctic, something that becomes quite likely in 2050. From then on, the scenario increasingly depends on our ability to reduce carbon emissions: with high emissions, in 2100 there could be an ice-free Arctic between May and January. With reduced emissions, the ice-free period would fall to August-October.
The consequences for the global climate are unthinkable, but no one cares about that outside of a tiny minority of human beings who refuse to commit genocide against their own descendants.
As the low electoral efficiency of environmentalism shows, the average human being accepts that his grandchild languishes under intense suffering in early childhood, as long as the price of gasoline does not rise this week.
Therefore, the melting of the Arctic has attracted attention, above all, because of what it reveals.
An ice-free Arctic is a much faster shipping route between North America, Europe and Asia than, for example, the Suéz Canal. It is an important change in the economic geography of the world.
The possibilities for naval warfare in the far north are also expanding. It was always, in theory, possible for the Soviet Union to invade each other through the Arctic. But the German experience of the Russian winter (by comparison, a mild spring) meant that neither side warmed to the idea.
When this is taken into account, it becomes clear that the Trumpist plan to steal Canada is part of the same vision of stealing land in the north because the environmental catastrophe should promote real estate appreciation in the region.
In addition, they have been investing in mining in Greenland. Many of them believe that Greenland could be a good place to install capitalist utopias independent of any state regulation. Billionaire Trumpist Peter Thiel, for example, believes that experiments like these would be a good alternative now that “democracy no longer serves freedom”, which is largely due to women’s right to vote.
In this scenario, Greenland would no longer belong to Denmark, a country with much better welfare indicators than those of the United States, to become a mixture of the pedophile island.
