Tragedy has struck the ski areas of Austria and Switzerland, where at least three people died after serious crashes on the slopes over the weekend. Accidents were accompanied by other injuries, and the big race was interrupted by the collapse of one of the participants.

At least three people have lost their lives in accidents that occurred in ski areas in Austria and Switzerland over the weekend. This was announced on Sunday by the police in both countries, reports TASR according to the DPA agency.

A 49-year-old Austrian man died after colliding with another skier in the Schmittenhöhe ski area in Zell am See in western Austria, police in the state of Salzburg said. The second participant in the accident, a 14-year-old teenager from Ireland, who left the scene together with a woman, reported himself to the police the day after the incident.

Crashes of skiers

In the Swiss canton of Obwalden, a snowboarder and a skier collided in the Melchsee-Frutt area. According to the police, one of them suffered fatal injuries. Further information was not yet available.

A 69-year-old man collapsed and died about 100 meters before the finish line in a mass ski race with nearly 2,000 participants in the village of Mürren in the canton of Bern in central Switzerland. They canceled the race, while at that time about half of the participants had already started.

Other accidents and injuries

In addition, there were numerous minor accidents. Among the injured was a 28-year-old woman from Germany who collided with a snowboarder from Romania at the Grubigstein ski resort in Tyrol. According to the police, both of them briefly lost consciousness.
