A possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, with subsequent military intervention by the United States, could lead the world to a Third World War. The warning was made by Jana Nelson, former United States Undersecretary of Defense, during an interview with CNN Prime Time.
Nelson highlighted that Taiwan represents his biggest concern in the current geopolitical scenario. While many American analysts focus attention on the war in Ukraine, the expert points to what has been carried out near the border with Taiwan as a worrying sign of possible invasive intentions.
American dilemma
The big question hanging over Washington, according to the former undersecretary, is whether the United States would intervene militarily in the event of China. “If they invaded Taiwan at some point, will the United States come to the defense or not?” Nelson asked during the interview.
For the expert, a counter Chinese force could represent the trigger for a conflict of global proportions. “And if we defend Taiwan, I think we will be getting very close to a third world war,” he warned.
