This Saturday it snowed like nothing has been seen in several areas of the country for a long time, in what is being considered the biggest snowfall of the decade. This Sunday, the concern becomes another: the floods, which have already caused much greater damage.
The passage through mainland Portugal has already caused one dead, one injured and 21 displacedaccording to the most recent Civil Protection report released this Sunday, which reports floods, fallen trees and structures.
According to the balance sheet, which totals 1,545 incidents between 4pm on Thursday and 5pm today, one person died in Pêro Monizin the municipality of Cadaval, following the dragging of a light passenger vehicle while trying to cross a watercourse. There were three people in the car.
One person was injured in the fall into a stream in Ponte de Lima, in the district of Viana do Castelo, and 21 were forced to abandon their homes in Alcobaça (two), Cartaxo (two), Cascais (three) and Peniche (14).
The bad weather has mainly affected the subregions of the West (214 incidents), Greater Lisbon (161) and the Coimbra region (131), according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority.
Falling trees (505), cleaning of paths or roads (459), falling structures (278), landslides (160), floods (136) and land rescues (two) and water rescues (five) were the incidents recorded, which mobilized 5,446 operators and 2,261 vehicles.
