- Russia ruled out negotiations with Kallas to end the war in Ukraine.
- The Kremlin criticized the EU leadership and called it incompetent.
- Moscow wants to wait for Kallasova to leave.
On Sunday, Russia ruled out the possibility of negotiations with the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, about ending the war in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called her, along with other representatives of the Union, incompetent, reports TASR based on reports from the DPA and TASS agencies.
Peskov in an interview for Russian state television, he stated that, according to him, the current EU leadership does not have visionaries with a view into the future. “They are untrained, incompetent officials who do not look to the future,” he noted. According to him, the entire system of international relations suffers from this. At the same time, he declared that, in his opinion, the EU only moved from its alleged dependence on Russian oil and gas to dependence on the United States.
Peskov was particularly critical of Kallasova, the former Prime Minister of Estonia. “We will never discuss anything with her and neither will the Americans,” he said. Moscow wants to wait until he leaves office, he added.
EU leadership and in particular Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also criticized Kallas on Thursday. He recalled that he openly protested against the nomination of the former Estonian prime minister to the post of head of EU diplomacy and that he recently requested her replacement.
“We have to replace the high representative of the European Union for international policy, Ms. Kallas. This is the first time I am saying this openly. She knows very well that I had many critical reservations about her. We are in a crisis, in an international crisis, Europe is unable to react, we do not have our own international positions. We are waiting 20 hours before any opinion is issued on what happened in Venezuela. We need strong leadership not only at the level of nation states,” announced Fico on January 11.
