Russian attacks left thousands without heating in Kyiv, Zelenskyy appeals to the West for air defense

Around 1,700 buildings are still without heating in Kiev after widespread Russian attacks, with Ukraine constantly asking allies for stronger air defenses. Intensive bombing of infrastructure left the country in sub-zero temperatures with problems in the supply of electricity.

About 1,700 residential buildings in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv are still without heating after Russian drone and missile attacks this week, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said on Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is asking allies for more support in the area of air defense, TASR reports, according to Reuters and AFP reports.

Moscow has significantly stepped up its bombing of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the invasion began in February 2022. On Saturday, Russia launched a large-scale attack, causing power outages across the country in sub-zero temperatures.

Infrastructure bombing

“Moscow’s main targets are currently the energy sector, critical infrastructure and residential buildings,” Zelenskyy said on Platform X. According to him, Moscow attacked Ukraine with 1,700 drones, deployed more than 1,380 guided aerial bombs and 69 missiles of various types in the past week alone. “That’s why we need missiles for air defense systems every day, and we work with the US and Europe every day to ensure greater protection of our skies,” he clarified. During his visit to Lithuania on Sunday, Zelensky emphasized that any larger attack could have devastating consequences. “We are working with all leaders to strengthen Ukraine. Everyone must understand the threat coming from Russia,” the Ukrainian head of state reminded.

Gradual restoration of heating

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Olexij Kuleba said on Saturday evening that more than 3,200 buildings in Kyiv are without heat supplies, while in the morning there were up to 6,000. “Maintenance and energy companies have restored heat supplies to more than 1,600 buildings since yesterday evening and continue to work on restoration in the homes of Kyiv residents,” added Klitschko on the Telegram social network.
