The US president said today that he will impose 100% tariffs on all imports from Canada if the North American country strikes a trade deal with China.
“For China to send goods and products to the United States, it is making a big mistake,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “China will eat Canada alive, swallow it whole, including destroying their businesses, their social fabric and their general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will be hit immediately with a 100% Tariff on all Canadian goods and products coming into the US.”
China’s role
During his recent visit to China, and in Davos, he encouraged European leaders to seek investment from the world’s second largest economy.
Trump claimed in his online post today that China will try to use Canada to avoid US tariffs.
Tensions between the US and its northern neighbor have risen in recent days.
The day before yesterday, Thursday, Trump withdrew the invitation to Canada to join his initiative called the Peace Council. He did so after Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he openly decried the use by powerful countries of economic integration as a weapon and tariffs as leverage.
