The negotiations, mediated by the US based on Trump’s 20-point plan, aim to create parameters for the end of the war and security guarantees. Both Zelensky and Putin gave their approval to the talks.

Steve Witkoff said that the Abu Dhabi meeting was coordinated by the United States with a trilateral format “kindly welcomed by the United Arab Emirates”. The publication includes a photograph of the meeting, with Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, at the center of the table.

In the publication, Zelensky also noted that in the trilateral meeting with Russia and the United States of America “possible parameters for ending the war” were discussed.

The Ukrainian head of state pointed out that there is “an understanding of the need for American monitoring and supervision of the process of ending the war and ensuring genuine security.”

First direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine end in Abu Dhabi

Ukrainian and Russian representatives today concluded a first round of negotiations in Abu Dhabi under American mediation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave his approval to hold trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi after a meeting on Friday with United States emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The Ukrainian leader did the same after meeting on Thursday with the North American President at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Russian delegation is led by Admiral Igor Kostiukov, number two on the General Staff and head of military secret (GRU), including only military personnel.

The Ukrainian delegation is made up of, among others, the head of military secret, Kyrylo Budanov, parliamentary leader David Arakhamia and the secretary of the National Security Council, Rustem Umerov.

Russia is categorically opposed to the deployment of Western troops on the territory of the neighboring country, which it invaded in February 2022, starting the ongoing war since then.

Ukraine demands guarantees that oblige the United States and European allies to defend the country in the event of new Russian aggression in line with Article 5 of NATO, which provides for collective defense if one of the members is attacked.
