Zelenskyj: The security document with the USA for Ukraine is ready for signing, the date is awaited

The American document on security guarantees for Ukraine is fully prepared, and Kiev is waiting for a decision on the time and place to sign it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this on Sunday, reports TASR according to the Reuters agency.

  • The American document on security guarantees for Ukraine is ready.
  • Kyiv is waiting for the date and place of signing the document.
  • The document must be ratified by the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament.
  • Zelenskyi agreed on the document with Donald Trump in Davos.
  • The territorial issues of Ukraine are still not resolved.

“For us, security guarantees are, first of all, security guarantees from the United States. This document is 100 percent ready, and we are waiting for our partners to confirm the date and place when we will sign it,” Zelenskyy said.

“The document will then be sent to the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament for ratification,” he said at a press conference during a visit to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

On Thursday, Zelenskyi said that at the meeting with US President Donald Trump in Davos, they agreed on the form of post-war US security guarantees for Ukraine, but he did not give further details. He also announced at the time that the documents aimed at ending the war in Ukraine are almost ready, but the territorial issues have not yet been resolved.

Some progress

According to Reuters, Zelensky’s statement on Sunday indicates that some progress has been made in the talks with Russia in Abu Dhabi in recent days.

Negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and mediators from the US gathered on Friday and Saturday for the first trilateral meeting in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss Washington’s plan to end the war. They did not announce specific results, but Moscow and Kyiv said they were willing to conduct further dialogue. Talks are expected to resume next Sunday (February 1) again in Abu Dhabi.

These talks are focused on the 20-point US plan and problematic issues, Zelenskyy said. “There were a lot of problematic questions, but now there are fewer of them,” he said on Sunday. According to him, Moscow wants to do everything to force Ukraine to give up its eastern regions, but Kyiv has not backed down from its insistence on the country’s territorial integrity.

“There are two fundamentally different positions – Ukrainian and Russian. The Americans are trying to find a compromise,” the Ukrainian president added, adding that all parties, including the US, must be ready for a compromise.
