Brazil reports 72 injured after lightning strikes rally

Lightning struck a group of people gathered at a political event in Brazil on Sunday, local media reported, citing fire department sources. About 72 people had to be treated, TASR informs, according to a report by the DPA agency.

After a lightning strike at an event in the capital of Brazil, 30 people were hospitalized, eight of them in a serious condition. In addition, they also recorded several cases of nervous breakdown.

Adverse weather in Brazil

The incident occurred during inclement weather in the Brazilian capital’s Praça do Cruzeiro square, where supporters of jailed ex-president Jair Bolsonaro had gathered to demonstrate for his release.

Since last November, Bolsonaro has been serving a prison sentence of more than 27 years for attempting a coup in the country, DPA reminds.

Videos from the event show people standing with umbrellas leaning against metal fencing during heavy rain. A sound similar to thunder is then heard, with several people collapsing and being caught by others. Rescuers and firefighters were called to the scene, adds the German agency.
